How Visuals are Telling the NAIAS Story

This Week in Realtime Media

Politics: State of the Union

President Obama delivered his final State of the Union address last Tuesday, and Twitter was all abuzz with #SOTU chatter. Overall, there were more than 950,000 Twitter mentions during the hour-long speech:

While Obama addressed a host of issues, it did not include the sharp focus on gun violence that many expected. Here's a look at the top issues mentioned on social media throughout the telecast:

Looking at who was driving #SOTU chatter, the White House was able to carry messages across social media, accounting for most of the top Tweets during the speech. However, there was one notable (and hilarious) exception from The Onion:

Overall, it seemed to be a big night for President Obama. From generating nearly one million tweets about his speech during the telecast, to dominating our Popular Tweets leaderboard, the public and media were definitely interested in what the President had to say during his last formal address to Congress and the country.

Health: JP Morgan Healthcare Conference

The 34th annual JP Morgan Healthcare Conference has been taking place all week long in San Francisco, and we have had our finger on the pulse of the latest bio-pharma headlines to emerge from the show.

Highlights?

Innovation is the Top #JPM16 Issue

It is all about advancement and progress at this year's JP Morgan Healthcare Conference. Looking at our Total Issues chart from the past day, people are talking about innovation more than anything else:

While biotech and data follow closely behind, it makes sense that innovation is at the forefront of #JPM16 conference talk. #JPM16 takes place at the start of the year for a reason—to highlight all of the innovation that is to come to the biosciences and pharmaceutical industries in 2016.

Literally Saving Lives at #JPM16

Much of the discussion at the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference is around making investments in medical breakthroughs. However, Athenahealth CEO Jonathan Bush appeared at the center of today's conversation:

According to reports, a man suffering an apparent heart attack outside of a San Francisco Walgreens had been down for a few minutes when Bush saw him. The CEO, who is also a former New Orleans emergency medical technician, said he administered CPR to help resuscitate the man until paramedics arrived on the scene.

While this undoubtedly was good press for the conference and its attendees, Bush stepping up to help the victim avoid a more dangerous situation is heroic.

Bloomberg was the Hub of #JPM16 Headlines

In terms of who had the most to share of stories around the JP Morgan Healthcare Conference, Bloomberg paved the way among media outlets:

Since the show kicked off, Bloomberg has been providing full reports from the conference, with stories ranging from "Anthem, Aetna Lead Health Insurer Rally on 2016 Forecasts" to "Health Care's $605 Billion Buying Binge May Slow in 2016." With all of these #JPM16-related headlines, Bloomberg may appear to be the primary resource for in-depth coverage of the conference.

Business: United's Brand Makeover

Mergers, corruption, and three CEOs in one year have not been easy times for United Airlines. With the New Year, the airliner is striving to be "less awful" in 2016.

What specifically is being done to improve their efforts?

"On Thursday, Bloomberg reported" that in recent months, the carrier has improved both on-time and missed-connection metrics. United has also seen a decrease in rate of mishandled baggage, and is now offering free snacks and revamping coffee choices.

Beyond the press, what are people currently saying about the United brand?

Negative sentiment is significantly lower than both positive and neutral remarks around United:

While this is just looking at the first few weeks of January, it demonstrates that people are most likely content with the service provided by the airliner. However, as United starts to implement changes, it will be interesting to see how people respond. Will positive sentiment outweigh neutral? Will other airliners make moves if more people start opting for United? We will have to wait and see.

Events: #NAIAS Press Preview

Ford! Mercedes! Fiat Stormtrooper cars? Yes.

This week, all of the automotive talk to come out of CES was brought to Detroit, as the North American International Auto Show kicked off with two days of press previews. On Monday and Tuesday alone, the show generated over 74k mentions, averaging 1,548 per hour:

Throughout press previews, Kia had the biggest individual moment with the reveal of their Concept SUV:

And, it was Ford that carried the conversation with the most mentions on Monday and Tuesday:

Looking closer at how #NAIAS stories travel beyond their source, visual social media sharing sites (sometimes being the source) came out on top:

This should be no surprise, as cars and trucks present a powerful visual experience that is often only found in Detroit during the show. From Instagram to Vine and every Youtube video in between, spreading visual #NAIAS content seems to be of upmost importance for both those who cannot attend the show, and attendees that want to draw attention to what they are seeing on display.
